How To Clean A Inline Muzzleloader
Without damage to the barrel? With the pellets cause harm just sitting in there or is it fine? Pretty soon i will be gettin the muzzleloader out for pig hunts and this is my first year using one. Do i need to unload the powder charge each time if i dont shoot anything?
I unload mine if its gonna be a week or so before I hunt again. Its just a good practice. If I leave it loaded I leave the ramrod IN the barrel. No chance of a double charge that way. Always mark your ramrod anyway. That's the advantage of an in-line.....easy to unload and easy to clean. Pick a system and stick with it, don't loan it to anyone.
I'll leave mine loaded for next year but only on a absolute clean barrel.
This year I killed with last year's load. Last year's load was put in a clean gun, and I didn't reload after my shot until I got to the cleaning table again. Gun and breach plug looks like I just fired one shot. Bore still shiny.
I wouldn't put it away dirty. Only loaded after cleaning.
That load I put in my gun is still sitting there for next year. Once in a Blue Moon it'll get shot during turkey season.
I do use pellets instead of powder.

Good deal! Yeah i didnt mean to walk past the saftey issues, for sure just me using it and would prob take out the breech plug each time.

Thanks!
As mentioned, won't hurt a thing as long as it was loaded clean, and leaving the ramrod in the barrel is the best way to remind you it's loaded. Goes without saying, but remove the primer!

Haha for sure no primer, thanks sir!
When I can I'll have a balloon over the end of the barrel also. Whether sitting in the safe or hunting.
I keep mine unloaded and load the day at the range or hunt. Unload if no shot taken. Clean ML after shoot or unload
Nope. BP is highly corrosive and you will end up with rust in the chamber. My now ex-step brother borrowed my dad's inline one year and told him it was unloaded and cleaned when he returned it. The next season I borrowed it and it was still loaded and not cleaned and absolutely caked with rust where the pyrodex pellets sat for a year.

agree!
The cost to turn you ML into a wall hanging decoration vs a useful gun no longer working by keeping it loaded is not the way to go. if some want to save $ on the cost of unloading the powder and sabot, they can loose the use of the ML and hunting time when the gun mucks up does not add up imho.
I thought one of the reasons you inline shooters have to justify modern muzzleloaders is the ease of unloading and cleaning. Just pull the breach plug and get on with it

You always see the glass ½ full?
I've never had any issues with leaving a clean barrel loaded. I guarantee you that anybody back in the day never had a moment in their life when their gun wasn't loaded except when it was being cleaned.
I thought the corrosiveness was in the spent powder residue in the barrel after it was shot.
My stainless Encore barrel still looks like a mirror inside after purchasing it in the early nineties.
That is correct. One of the reasons for hanging a rifle over the fireplace was to keep the powder dry. Moisture can build up in unfired powder especially in the humid south east and corrode the breach area. Stainless steel not so much

I "justified" my modern muzzleloader cuz the state of Georgia changed the law allowing centerfire hog hunting on wma land in winter to small game weapons only. I only bought a black powder rifle because i had to, so i bought the cheapest cva wolf with iron sites i could find. I love runnin the woods in the dead of winter with no one around chasin hogs all over heck and back. Its my favorite season. I love old things and the old ways more than most, but i couldnt afford to spend $$$$ on an old flintlock so i bought what i could. I think it works great for what i need it for.
Thanks for all the help! I guess i'll be ok as long as i keep it clean and dry. If it gets a little rusty no big deal. It was meant to be a budget beater rifle anyways.
IF you did accidentally leave one loaded…and it now has rust/crud in the chamber…would you not use the rifle,or consider it unsafe?? Asking for a friend…😜🤐
